Pros

  • An experienced arthritis specialist and senior consultant rheumatologist
  • An avid researcher

Cons

  • Difficulty in setting up an appointment
  • No scheduled follow-up checkup

Knowing that he’s one of the best rheumatologists in Singapore, we’re not surprised with Dr. Leong Keng Hong’s stellar record. We’ll let his years of experience speak for himself!

First things first, Dr. Yeong has been a consultant physician and rheumatologist at the Gleneagles Medical Centre for at least 25 years now. However, he has also worked with other institutions, such as Tan Tock Seng Hospital and National University Hospital.

Apart from his over two decades of medical experience, he has also been an adjunct associate professor at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the esteemed National University of Singapore since 2011.

To add to his already impressive resume, he has also been serving as the said university’s associate dean since 2018. Moreover, he founded the Osteoporosis Society Singapore in 1996 and served as its president for almost eight years.

His keen interest in rheumatic diseases, as well as other degenerative conditions, has pushed him to publish several articles about these topics in different medical journals and textbooks.

Dr. Leong is also known for his effective diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic conditions, including arthritis, lupus, gout, and ankylosing spondylitis.

Nonetheless, scheduling an appointment with this brilliant rheumatologist can be a little bit more challenging than expected. You may need to wait for weeks or even months to consult with Dr. Leong.

We also think that Dr. Leong should also keep track of the patient’s follow-up checkups. This should be added to his calendar to avoid causing inconvenience.

Pros

  • A doctor that employs aggressive integrative treatment
  • Uses advanced medical technology

Cons

  • Doesn’t allow walk-in patients
  • Consultation fee of about $214

Another contender for the best rheumatologist in Singapore is Dr. Eugene Lim.

From what we know, this talented physician has received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Singapore. He then pursued further training at the International Fellow of American College of Rheumatology (ACR) in the US.

He earned the Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Certification in Rheumatology from both the ACR and EULAR (European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology). He’s also a EULAR-certified musculoskeletal ultrasound trainer.

When Dr. Lim established the Elim Rheumatic Centre, his primary goal was to help improve the lives of patients who are suffering from various rheumatic problems.

Using advanced medical tools and equipment, Dr. Lim has been able to accurately diagnose and treat patients. In fact, his clinic offers a wide range of innovative treatment plans like prolotherapy and pulsed electromagnetic field therapy.

Unfortunately, Dr. Lim’s clinic has an appointment-only policy. Therefore, walk-in patients with emergency needs aren’t allowed to consult with him.

This Elim Rheumatic Centre may also charge you at least $214 per consultation. That’s a bit of a stretch if you ask us.

Pros

  • A senior consultant with over 20 years of clinical experience
  • Believes in timely intervention of rheumatic disease

Cons

  • Suddenly cancels appointments with patients
  • High-cost services

We also added Dr. Sheila Vasoo of The Arthritis and Rheumatology Clinic (ARC) on this list. She has been steadily gaining attention from patients who are seeking preventive treatment for their rheumatic problems.

Dr. Vasoo is a graduate of the prestigious National University of Singapore. Shortly after receiving her degree, she went on to pursue further education at the Royal College of Physicians in the UK.

Besides running ARC, she’s also a visiting consultant at the University Medicine Cluster and a programme director of the Pregnancy Loss Clinic.

We also discovered that Dr. Vasoo was featured in The Singapore Women’s Weekly when she was nominated for the Great Women of Our Time 2016 for Health, Sports, and Wellness.

Her long list of accomplishments doesn’t end there! She’s also one of the members of the workgroup for creating the National Clinical Practice Guidelines on osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis management.

In general, the ARC offers a comprehensive treatment procedure for different rheumatic conditions. Dr. Vasoo provides evaluation and personalized management plans to ensure quick recovery.

Unfortunately, this center is notorious for suddenly canceling appointments to accommodate other patients. Postponing consultations for no good reason, however, may cause patients to switch to other clinics that they feel can value their time.

Patients may also need to prepare their wallets since the ARC charges high consultation and treatment fees. If you’re on a tight budget, you may find its rates a bit over the top.

4. Dr. Liew Woei Kang

Pros

  • A doctor who specializes in rheumatology
  • Speaks both Mandarin and English

Cons

  • Limited services
  • Lack of transparency in pricing

For expats who want to consult a rheumatologist in Singapore, Dr. Liew Woei Kang may be their best option. This highly accomplished doctor speaks both Mandarin and English, which allows him to communicate with his patients well.

Apart from being bilingual, Dr. Liew is a well-known consultant pediatrician and shareholder of the Singapore Women’s Children’s Medical Group. In fact, the Paediatric Allergy Immunology Rheumatology Centre is under the same organization.

Dr. Liew graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1997. Almost 10 years later, he received the Health Manpower Development Plan Award from the Ministry of Health Singapore, which allowed him further training in Australia.

After his stint at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Dr. Liew was assigned as an adjunct assistant professor in his alma mater. As a dedicated researcher, he has been awarded several grants by SingHealth Foundation and other institutions.

While we love Dr. Liew’s long list of outstanding credentials and about 25 years of experience in the field, we can’t help but note that the scope of his services is narrower than the other clinics that we’ve mentioned here.

Moreover, the lack of a price list on his clinic’s website can be a bit troublesome. For some patients, knowing the rates before scheduling an appointment with the doctor can help them avoid unintended expenses.

Pros

  • A doctor who is passionate about excellent patient care
  • Offers both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatments

Cons

  • Difficulty in setting up an appointment
  • Administrative staff needs to be more friendly and accommodating

Emphasizing good patient care, Dr. Lui Nai Lee is among the best rheumatologists in Singapore, and we can tell you just why!

An alumnus of the National University of Singapore, Dr. Lui further advanced his education by getting a master’s degree in medicine at the Royal College of Physicians in the UK. In 2009, he was officially recognized as a rheumatic specialist.

During the same year, he was awarded the SingHealth Health Manpower Development Plan Award, which gave him the great opportunity to undergo rigorous training in Toronto, Canada.

Dr. Liu was also selected to participate in two fellowship programs in Singapore and the UK, in 2012 and 2015, respectively.

Before entering into private practice, Dr. Liu served as a consultant rheumatologist and physician-in-charge of the Spondyloarthritis Clinic under the Autoimmunity and Rheumatology Centre of the Singapore General Hospital.

He’s also heavily involved in clinical research and has published his works in various international peer-reviewed medical journals.

Honestly, we’re impressed by his achievements and his work ethic. However, his clinic staff needs a little bit of improvement to avoid confusion and misunderstandings, especially when it comes to appointments.

We’re quite disappointed about how some of the receptionists aren’t as friendly nor helpful. We hope Dr. Liu can immediately address this problem.

  • Extensive experience in her field of specialization
  • Makes use of a holistic approach to treating rheumatic conditions
  • Multilingual

Cons

  • Closed every Wednesday afternoon

Dr. Ooi Pei Ling specializes in Paediatrics and also subspecializes in Paediatric Rheumatology, to treat autoimmune diseases as well as muscle and joint pains in children.

She got her MBBS from the National University of Singapore where she was even part of the Dean’s List. She received post-graduation qualifications with the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (UK) and Master of Medicine (Paediatrics).

For more, she also received specialist accreditation in Paediatric Medicine in 2014. All of which we find very impressive.

We’re also impressed by the fact that she has extensive experience in caring for babies, children and adolescents because she’s trained in many Paediatric subspecialties.

As a Paediatric Rheumatologist, she specializes in treating autoimmune conditions non-inflammatory chronic musculoskeletal pain in children and adolescents.

What we like about her is her holistic approach when treating rheumatic conditions. What’s more is she’s highly skilled in treating with biologic and non-biologic immunomodulatory medications and joint injections.

To add to all of these, she is also conversant in three languages—English, Chinese and Malay.

Not only is she a highly skilled and talented doctor, but she’s also very compassionate and caring, not only towards the patient but their families as well.
