The 12 Best Foods in AMK Hub That Will Make You Say “Makan More!”

I’m not ashamed to say I’ve eaten my way through AMK Hub food stalls more times than I can count. It’s easy enough to sate my cravings here, whether it’s for laksa, sushi, or just a coffee break mid-work.

Suffice it to say, this place delivers on the gustatory front. Here’s my go-to list of top food spots worth queuing for, from hearty meals to quick bites.

Shan Cheng (Ipoh Delicacies)

Hours: Daily, 10 AM-8.30 PM

Price: $$

Must-try: Char siew hor fun

For a quick fix of local favourites, I always head off to Shan Cheng because it delivers every single time. Its yong tau foo platter is generous, and its curry mee packs serious flavour without being too jelak.

Also, don’t give the char siew hor fun, with its silky, smoky, and seriously good wok hei, a pass! It’s all about legit, Ipoh-style comfort food that’s especially great when I’m feeling blah.

Pro-tip: Go early for lunch. Popular items like the curry mee and hor fun sell out fast.

Prata Raya

Hours: Daily, 7 AM–10 PM

Price: $

Must-try: Roti prata

Prata Raya is my go-to when I want crispy prata with fluffy insides, especially the banana one that has just the right sweetness. Its nasi goreng pattaya also hits the spot, wrapped in egg and packed with savoury goodness.

There’s a wide spread at this place, from briyani to thosai, all at decent prices for quick bites or heavier meals. It’s fast, filling, and fuss-free, which is just how I like it on most days.

Pro-tip: You can ask for your prata extra crispy! The staff will do it, especially if it’s not too crowded.

Fuji Izakaya & Oyster Bar

Hours: Daily, 8 AM- 10 PM

Price: $

Must-try: Mentaiko grilled oysters

Fuji Izakaya at Ang Mo Kio Food Hub surprised me with its quality-to-price ratio, especially with its mentaiko grilled oysters, which were smoky and rich. Its ebi furai don is also worth a try for its crisp and satisfying taste, and a good portion for its price.

The place is a chill spot for solo meals or small groups, with plenty of classic Japanese comfort food to choose from. It’s a good pick if you’re craving izakaya vibes minus the splurge.

Pro-tip: Drop by before 6 PM to avoid the dinner crowd and score fresh oysters.

Home Fiesta by TungLok

Location: Stall B1-51C

Hours: Daily, 10 AM-10 PM

Price: $$

Must-try: Steamed pork bun

I love the fact that I can get no-frills Asian comfort food at AMK Hub through Home Fiesta. Its curry chicken is great with rice and is both tender and lemak. I also get the savoury and satisfying stewed minced pork rice because it reminds me of Taiwanese lu rou fan.

For sides, I usually order the deep-fried prawn dumplings or a fluffy steamed pork bun to go. It’s surprisingly affordable for a TungLok brand, as well as being reliable and fast!

Pro-tip: Mix the curry with minced pork rice for a DIY combo that hits both cravings.

Egg Thai

Hours: Daily, 10.30 AM–9 PM

Price: $

Must-try: Golden pad Thai egg floss

Egg Thai serves legit Thai flavours: spicy, tangy, and not watered down. The golden pad Thai with crispy egg floss is my favourite, both in its taste and texture.

Its Thai basil chicken is also punchy and well-balanced, great over rice for a quick lunch or dinner. If you like especially bold flavours, try the tom yum soup and its strong lemongrass profile.

Pro-tip: You can ask for extra egg floss to add crunch and soak up the sauce beautifully.

Ichiban Sushi

Hours:

Monday to Friday, 11.30 AM–10 PM

Saturday to Sunday, 11 AM–10 PM

Price: $$

Must-try: Fresh sushi and sashimi

Sometimes, I just want sushi minus the fuss and gimmicky frills. That’s when I go to Ichiban Sushi, where the sushi sets are value-for-money and already come with soup, chawanmushi, and a dessert.

It’s family-friendly and consistent, with comforting sides like udon and tonkatsu, too. Service is brisk, and the turnover is always fast, even on weekends.

Pro-tip: The value sets change seasonally and usually include dessert, so go for them when you’re on a budget.

Talad Thai Banana

Location: Stall B2-17

Hours: Daily, 11 AM–9 PM

Price: $

Must-try: Thai fried banana

What I like most about Talad Thai Banana’s fried offerings is that everything is freshly fried and best eaten hot. It’s the ideal crunchy snack for when you’re busy shopping and can’t be bothered to sit down for a bite.

It’s cheap, cheerful, and always has a queue for this reason. The sweet crispiness can be addicting, and the knowledge that there’s a fruit under all that goodness makes it less of an indulgence.

Pro-tip: If you want something less sweet, try the yam chips or sweet potato balls.

Dunkin’ Donuts

Hours: Daily, 7 AM–10 PM

Price: $

Must-try: Mochi rings

When I need a sugar rush or caffeine fix (and sometimes both) on the fly, I go to Dunkin’ at AMK Hub. The mochi rings are my picks for their softness and taste, and they pair well with iced coffee for a morning pick-me-up.

I usually grab a box of assorted doughnuts for the office, with Boston Kreme and Strawberry Frosted being the staff’s perennial faves. I like swinging by when I need to bring something to a casual gathering or as a treat for my family.

Pro-tip: Try buying after 8 PM; boxes of doughnuts are often discounted for the day’s end.

Fish & Co.

Location: Stall 02-02

Hours: Daily, 11 AM–9.30 PM

Price: $$

Must-try: Seafood platter

My family usually picks Fish & Co when we’re in AMK because we love seafood but don’t want to break the bank for it. Its sharing platters are big, so there’s always something for everyone without anyone fighting over a prawn.

The kids love the fish and chips, while I go straight for the mussels and grilled prawns. Service is fast, and the portions are big enough that you can forego dessert (and your wallet will thank you!).

Pro-tip: Ask for mixed sides. You can swap out fries for seasonal veggies or rice at no extra cost.

Swensen’s

Location: Stall B1-21A

Contact: +6562359902

Hours: Daily, 11 AM–10.30 PM

Price: $$

Must-try: Chicken and fries basket

Swensen’s has become our child staple-turned-family fallback for its range of desserts and savoury dishes. I like its hearty burgers, chicken and fries basket, and creamy pasta, but to be perfectly honest, I really go here for the Earthquake sundae!

It’s casual, air-conditioned, and has something for picky eaters and sweets fanatics alike. It’s a good spot when you want comfort food with ice cream to seal the deal.

Pro-tip: The Earthquake sundae is big enough to share between two people. It’s huge and cheaper than ordering two individual scoops.

Ai Shang

Media from travelforlife2511

Location: Stall 03-12

Contact: +6580785256

Hours: Daily, 10 AM-9.30 PM

Price: $

Must-try: Laksa gyoza

I think Ai Shang at AMK is underrated. Everyone should try its laksa gyoza for its creamy spice and crisp skin. Also, its chicken pan-fried bun is juicy and golden, and it’s great with the vinegar dip.

The prices here are low, and the portions are solid. Plus, the menu is full of playful twists on familiar flavours! It’s my sneaky fix when I want dumplings with a kick.

Pro-tip: You can order the gyoza to-go. They stay crispy longer than you’d expect.

DaXi Dumplings

Location: Stall B1-19/20

Contact: +6562576422

Hours: Daily, 11 AM–10 PM

Price: $

Must-try: Smoked duck dumplings

For some of the juiciest dumplings you’ll ever have in a mall, I highly suggest visiting DaXi Dumpling. Its smoked duck ones are smoky, rich, and a level up from the usual variety.

Meanwhile, the Sichuan pepper dumpling has a mild numbing kick for those who like heat minus the sweat. The shop also does grilled rice sets that are hearty and well-balanced for lunch.

Pro-tip: Mix the vinegar and chilli oil at the counter to level up every dumpling you’ll be dipping.
