Kallang Bahru is my kind of neighbourhood, with its affordable eats, no-frills charm, a mix of HDB blocks, cafes, and even a mall that’s friendly to my university student wallet.
It’s a sweet spot for travellers, locals, and mall-goers looking to chill without overspending. Think of it as the practical side of Singapore that’s well-connected, full of character, and ideal for anyone wanting to see the city beyond the usual tourist traps.
Where is Kallang Bahru?

Kallang Bahru, part of Singapore’s Kallang planning area, lies beside Bendemeer Road and above the Kallang Basin.
What is Kallang Bahru’s main street?
Kallang Bahru Road serves as the neighbourhood’s central artery, linking the estate directly to Lavender Street on one end and Geylang Bahru on the other.

Location: Kallang Bahru Road, between Lavender Street and Boon Keng Road
I like wandering the back streets of Kallang Bahru, where machine shops buzz right across from HDB blocks. It’s a strange but oddly comforting mix you won’t find much elsewhere in the city.
One moment, I’m walking past workers unloading supplies, the next, I’m under the void decks where kids are playing. That blend of grit and homeliness is exactly what makes the area stick in my mind.

There’s always some activity that pulls me into the Kallang Community Club even when I’m not signed up for anything. I’ve participated in badminton games and watched festive dances there without planning to.
It’s the easiest way to feel plugged into the neighbourhood without trying too hard.

Though it isn’t as known for public murals the way Chinatown or Little India are, Kallang Bahru does have small murals hidden under void decks, car park walls, and community boards. They’re easy to miss, but once spotted, they give the estate a little more colour.
My tip: go when there’s daylight, be discreet (don’t block corridors), and scout lift lobbies, stair cores, and utility doors as those are the usual “canvas” spots for spontaneous art.

I dropped by 85 Panettone Bakery for a sourdough baguette, but ended up taking home a bag full of freshly baked treats. So sue me: the cheese tarts and buns looked too good to pass up!
Try the salted caramel bun that’s oozing with rich filling, and the chocolate buns that stay soft and moist the next day.

Kaeden Cafe is my little splurge spot when I’ve saved enough of my pocket money to treat myself. The confit duck and beef burger always hit the spot, with both cooked to perfection.
The burger here is so massive, you might just end up taking it apart just to finish it!

Skinny Chef surprised me with portions that looked almost too generous for the price. The salmon was tender and went quite well with the accompanying truffle mushroom sauce.
I like that I get to choose two sides, so I went and got both potato wedges and a mesclun salad.

Bugis Fish Head Steamboat hooked me with its assam fish slices that were sweet, sour, spicy, and tangy all at once. The place is bright, clean, and run by a boss who jokes with all the customers.
Just be ready to share the air with uncles debating loudly over their dinner!

FairPrice Kallang Bahru’s food section feels like a little treasure hunt in the middle of an HDB block. One day, it’s Mr Beast chocolate, the next, it’s Korean ice cream sitting beside local favourites.
I’ve picked up otah, curry puffs, and even ready-to-eat sushi here when I didn’t know what to eat. This NTUC reflects the neighbourhood, with a snapshot of Kallang Bahru tastes.

I do love the old-school kopitiam vibe at Kallang Bahru, but when I need a break from it, I’m glad there’s the nearby Aperia Mall to browse through. It’s modern enough to feel fresh, but small enough not to overwhelm.
You can grab coffee, visit a few shops, or even watch friends test their bouldering skills in this mall.

On the days I need fresh ingredients for cooking, I go straight to Geylang Bahru Market (also known as Kallang Bahru Hawker Centre among locals). The seafood and veggies are always fresh, and it’s heartland through and through with no touristy affectations.
If I’m feeling peckish, I queue at the Michelin-star duck rice stall or the one selling hor fun with giant prawns.

Teak Furniture/Asian Teak is my go-to when I feel like imagining how my future Kallang Bahru flat will look. Its showroom is filled with solid, beautiful pieces that don’t feel overpriced.
Its owner, Mr Dave, always listens and gives practical tips, which makes browsing feel more personal.

I took my mom to this Kallang Bahru haute couture boutique once, and now, she insists on going back every chance she gets! She left with a couple of bags and three pairs of heels on her first trip.
I have to admit, the quality stands out. The stitching, the finish, and every detail look and feel well-made, so I can’t blame my mom for blowing a gasket at Hope Roza.
