counselling-services-for-mental-health-singapore

The best counselling services for mental health in Singapore can be your support system!

  • License and Certification. We made sure that all counsellors we recommend have the proper licenses and certifications.

First, we checked that they have an undergraduate degree and a postgraduate diploma or master’s degree in counselling from a renowned institution like the Singapore University of Social Sciences.

Then, we checked if they are registered counsellors with the Singapore Association for Counselling (SAC). This means they have completed a minimum of 600 hours of supervised clinical practice and 50 hours of face-to-face supervision.

  • Variety of Services. We like it when a counselling clinic has counsellors who specialise in many types of issues, such as anxiety and depression, PTSD, low-esteem, and grief.

It’s also good news to us if they can cater to kids, teens, and adults alike, and if they offer alternative counselling options like group counselling or online counselling.

  • Personality and Counselling Style. For us, the ideal counsellor is kind, warm, and empathetic, so we gauged their personality and counselling style through personal sessions. We acknowledge that this is very subjective, so we also asked other patients for their opinions on the counsellors.

  • Pricing. We prefer clinics with rates that don’t exceed S$250 (including any surcharges). Also, we’d like it if they’re covered by insurance and if they offer different payment methods to accommodate people of all budgets.

Feeling so down you can’t get out of bed? As someone with a history of mental health struggles, I understand that feeling.

As cliché as it may sound, one of the things that’s helping me is talking to a counsellor. Letting everything out makes me feel lighter, and my counsellor provides me with a whole new perspective on things.

There’s no shame in looking for professional help. Here are the best mental health counsellors in Singapore who are understanding and nonjudgmental.

The Listening Ear Counselling and Consultancy is one of my go-to clinics for counselling, and that’s because of Karl Desouza, the lead counsellor. I find him sincere and compassionate; even in my raw moments, I can feel his support.

Many clients agree with me. There’s even one client, who is also a therapist himself, who praised Desouza, saying that he fosters a respectful and open environment wherein any thoughts or feelings can be freely expressed.

Another impressive thing about this clinic is that it offers a wide variety of services. For one thing, they can deal with the most common issues like anxiety and depression, and for another, they have specialisations, such as addiction and mid-life counselling.

Additionally, their clientele is pretty varied. They have worked with couples, families, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and even expats.

The only downside to this clinic is the pricing. The in-person session costs S$250, and if you extend beyond the 1-hour limit, you’ll have to pay S$50 per hour.

If you want a cheaper option, they do have online counselling, which costs S$200.

Pros

  • Sincere and compassionate counsellors
  • Wide variety of services
  • Wide variety of clientele
  • Online counselling available

Cons

  • Slightly expensive rates

Safe and non-judgmental space

As a fellow therapist, I can say that Karl provides a truly safe and non-judgemental space. He fosters a respectful and open environment where feelings and thoughts can be freely explored. What stands out most is the genuine interest he shows in each person’s journey, gently supporting you in developing new and healthier ways of thinking.

Kind and deeply empathetic

Karl is kind, humorous, and deeply empathetic. His non-judgmental approach in therapy has helped me greatly in my healing journey. He holds space for me during my most vulnerable, raw, and difficult moments. I would have not gotten through the first few weeks of my trauma without his unwavering support. He gently guide you to uncover your fundamental beliefs system, and provides you with different perspectives to ponder. He has taught me to heal, to advocate for my own needs, and most importantly, to see hope, peace, and joy when I could not see it.”

If you’re on a budget, the Singapore Counselling Centre is the best option for you. This institution is supported by the National Council of Social Service (NCSS), so some of the services are subsidised. You’d only have to pay S$29.43.

Unfortunately, only a few people are eligible for subsidised counselling services (e.g., full-time students with a valid student card from MOE schools and senior citizens with a valid Merdeka or Pioneer Generation card). But this is still worth noting.

Even without the subsidy, their prices are great. Individual counselling rates are usually between S$180 and S$208, and you can even book a package of four or more sessions, which gives you an 8% discount at the very least.

Their lineup of specialisations is impressive. In addition to the usual issues like anxiety and depression, their counsellors are also equipped to deal with mental health problems because of debt, gambling addiction, and even pet loss.

I also love that this centre has its own mobile app. This makes booking and rescheduling appointments for both in-person and virtual sessions so much easier. Through this app, you can also access resources shared by your counsellor.

Pros

  • Subsidised by the NCSS
  • Affordable prices (even without subsidy)
  • Impressive lineup of services
  • Has its own app
  • Online counselling available

Cons

  • Only a few people are eligible for the subsidised sessions

Experienced and knowledgeable

Thank you, Dr. John, for sharing your counseling experience and knowledge. I’ve been going through a bit of a low point recently and have been carrying some emotions. After listening to your sharing, I feel much better. I’ll try to practice the skills you mentioned in class and train my mindset, hoping that I can keep getting better.”

Thought-provoking and authentic

Attending Dr. John’s talk was an absolute delight. His ability to connect with the audience through heartfelt stories, insightful reflections, and a touch of humor made the session both engaging and uplifting. Dr. John speaks with such authenticity and clarity that it’s impossible not to feel inspired. His message was not only thought-provoking but also deeply relevant to our everyday lives — a perfect reminder of the power of positivity, kindness, and perspective. Thank you, Dr. John, for such a meaningful and refreshing talk. It truly left a lasting impression.”

Talk Your Heart Out is best known for its online counselling services, but they also now offer face-to-face sessions. The best part is that they have multiple locations (currently five) throughout Singapore, so you can visit the one closest to you.

Their pricing is probably the best part of this clinic. The base rate is $95 (for online counselling), which is roughly around S$123. Some of their specialist counsellors do charge more, but it’s not too much.

Clients also have great things to say about the counsellors themselves. One told me that she liked how her counsellor didn’t rush her to tell everything. This made it easy for her to really feel her feelings and choose the right words properly.

I do have to say that their list of specialisations is lacking, especially when compared to other clinics. They do deal with the usual emotional issues, as well as disorders like anorexia, ADHD, and OCD, but that’s it.

Also, in terms of modalities, they only do cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). This method is great and comes highly recommended, but it would’ve been better if they had other options just in case the client doesn’t mesh well with CBT.

Pros

  • Offers both face-to-face and virtual sessions
  • Multiple locations
  • Affordable rates
  • Patient and understanding counsellors

Cons

  • Specialisations and modalities are fewer than those of competitors

Warm and caring

Glenn is warm and caring. She provides a safe space to open up and be honest with my partner and she’s observant about my feelings during the session as well. She explains the process well and tasks me and my partner with practical homework we can do at home to work on rebuilding our relationship.”

Prompt response, effective platforms

They have a convenient and effective platform. From booking the session to the actual session, there are timely reminders sent via email. During a technical issue on a weekend, the team was able to respond promptly and rectify the error. The system is also easy to navigate. My therapist, Aparna has also been very helpful in this journey of self-discovery.”

What makes Insightful Counselling and Training stand out is its lineup of services. Not only do they deal with emotional and behavioural issues, but they have also worked with clients facing relationship issues (e.g., couples and family counselling).

The counsellors here are also trained in various modalities, like CBT, EMDR therapy, and the Gottman Method. So, if you find that a particular method isn’t working for you, your counsellor can switch to a different one.

When it comes to the counsellors themselves, clients told me that they’re gentle and ask the right questions to prompt reflection. The counsellors also pay close attention, remembering even a small detail that one said in passing, and clients appreciated that.

If you can’t come to a face-to-face session, they offer virtual counselling sessions as well.

The pricing is fairly reasonable; the range is usually between S$150 and S$230. However, that’s only for weekdays. If your appointment is on a weekend, the rates rise to S$180 and S$260, which is not great for us on a budget.

Pros

  • Impressive lineup of services
  • Trained in various modalities
  • Gentle and attentive counsellors
  • Both face-to-face and virtual sessions available
  • Relatively reasonable pricing

Cons

  • Prices for weekend sessions are more expensive

Patient and understanding

I am truly grateful to have Ms. Siddhi Raman as my counselor. She is always there to listen to me, whether it’s about my family issues or career-related concerns. Her guidance has helped me see that there is always a way to solve problems, no matter how difficult they may seem. She has completely changed my perception of thinking and helped me develop a more positive outlook on life. I deeply appreciate her patience, understanding, and constant support.”

Warm and attentive

“I had a really lovely experience speaking with Mhairi. She brought such warmth and attentiveness to our conversation that I immediately felt comfortable and truly listened to. Her genuine care and presence made a real difference, and I deeply appreciated how thoughtfully she engaged with me.”

What I like most about Inside Out Counselling and Wellness is that they offer free screening right on their website. So, if you’re not sure about booking a session, you can fill out the form, and someone will reach out to give you a brief assessment.

If the results show that you’re experiencing some mental or emotional issue, go ahead and book a session. The counsellors here are trained to deal with a myriad of concerns, such as anxiety and depression, eating disorders, phobias, substance abuse, and more.

They’re also proficient in various methodologies. Aside from CBT, they can do acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), psychodynamic therapy, narrative therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), and more.

Additionally, I like that they’ve also worked with children, couples, and families. They even provide employee counselling!

This clinic offers texting counselling as well, which I find fascinating. I think this is something that shy and anxious people will like, or those who are feeling so much stress that they have to vent right this moment.

That said, some clients have complained that the clinic can be unreliable sometimes. Counsellors might be late to appointments or even miss them entirely, or they might question payments even though they were already made.

Pros

  • Free screening
  • Variety of specialisations and services
  • Proficient in various methodologies
  • Wide clientele
  • Offers texting counselling

Cons

  • Sometimes late to or miss appointments
  • Occasional misunderstanding about payment

Wonderful therapists

My son had a great time here! The therapists are wonderful, and the classes conducted for kids are very well-structured and conducive for learning and development. It’s clear that a lot of thought goes into creating a fun and engaging environment. Highly recommended for parents looking for quality programs for their children.”

Safe environment

It’s my first time reaching out to the counselling team and I am glad that I managed to step out to reach out for help! Credits to Ms Tan Yuyun, she has helped me to clear my thoughts and also shared some of her similar encounters with me. She created a very safe environment for me to share my insecurities with her, I found out that I was able to open up to share. She made me feel heard and guided me through the tough times. Although our session was a short one, I managed to learn more about myself and understand my needs!
