Guide to Your Baby’s 100 Days Celebration in Singapore (A Party You’ll Actually Enjoy)

Being the “fun aunt” means planning more 100 days celebrations than ordinary aunties.

I’ve seen firsthand how this tradition has evolved, from years of buying red eggs to organising Instagrammable dessert tables. What used to be a quiet family gathering is now a full-blown milestone event with themes, catering, and custom onesies.

Here’s how to honour tradition and throw a party that your baby won’t likely remember (though everybody else will!).

What is the 100 days celebration in Singapore all about?

In my family, hitting 100 days was a big deal. It meant the baby was thriving, and we had a reason to feast.

It stems from a tradition called bai ri yan, and it’s all about health, luck, and gratitude.

Back then, surviving the first few months wasn’t guaranteed, so 100 days felt like a milestone worth shouting about (and giving away red eggs and ang ku kueh to share the joy).

These days, we still do that. But now, it comes with balloon garlands, themed cakes, and a million photos. Old meets new, and every celebration feels a little more us.

Planning Your Baby’s 100 Days Celebration

Choose the date and guest list

Though it’s traditionally held on the 100th day, many families now choose a weekend for convenience (and to suit everyone’s busy schedules). For my newest niece, we aimed for the latter, as we wanted more people to show up, and nobody seemed to mind.

It was the guest list that was the real puzzle, since we were on a budget. We kept it to close family and friends, though I’ve seen some go full wedding style with name cards and all!

Selecting the Right Venue

As with choosing the date and guest list, the venue should also fit your budget, preference, theme, and other personal considerations. Here’s what we’ve done through the years:

  • Home celebrations – We held my nephew’s celebration at home because it’s his safe space, so he stayed calm and happy. Plus, it was easier to decorate!
  • Restaurants and cafes – A cousin booked a restaurant with a private room, and the staff took care of everything.
  • Hotel function rooms – One niece’s celebration was at a hotel ballroom, which felt like a coming-out party (with miniature scales of everything).
  • Outdoor gardens and parks – This one’s my favourite; we hiked to a nearby park, laid out a picnic mat, kept it chill, and took lots of photos.

Catering and Food Ideas

From traditional treats to modern desserts, here’s how we’ve fed guests at 100 days celebrations:

  • Traditional red eggs and ang ku kueh – Can’t skip the classics, so we always start with some red eggs (symbolising new life) and ang ku kueh (chewy rice pastry symbolising longevity).
  • Customised dessert tables – One of my nieces had a dessert cart with baby-face macarons, and they were a hit!
  • Full buffet or set menus – For bigger crowds (and when the parents are flush with cash), we’ve gone with hotel buffets so there’s zero stress and lots of food.
  • DIY catering – Sometimes, we cook everything ourselves. It’s tiring, but feels extra-meaningful.

Themed Parties and Decor

Soft pastels, cultural fusion, and photo-worthy setups are transforming 100-day parties into stylish, meaningful celebrations. Here are some things we’ve done over the years:

1. Classic themes

Classic is safe, and can be cute if you do it creatively. We went with a pastel bear theme once; everything from the cake to the balloons followed the palette. It was easy to coordinate and looked great in photos!

2. Cultural fusion

There are fun ways to keep the traditional feel without looking old-school, and incorporate something fresh and contemporary in the celebration. For instance, my cousin blended red lanterns and gold accents with a sleek, white setup.

3. Photo booth and keepsake corner

At my nephew’s 100 days celebration, we set up a photo booth with baby-themed props and instant prints. Guests also left hand-written notes in a keepsake box we still have (and plan to present to him when he’s older and can read).

Memorable Ways to Celebrate

There are alternative ways to hold a 100 days celebration which can be meaningful, personal, and creative, yet be practical at the same time. Here are some we’ve done in the past:

1. Charity donations

One friend skipped party favours and donated to a kids’ charity, instead. It felt more meaningful for her family, and inspired us so much that we followed suit and included a donation note in my niece’s invites for her 100 days.

2. Personalised gifts

For something simple yet personal, we thought of giving out miniature name plaques as keepsakes. My sister framed her baby’s 100-day handprint and started a journal to mark each milestone after the celebration.

3. Virtual celebrations

Over the years, we’ve had grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives join us over Zoom for 100 days celebrations because they couldn’t fly in. It’s not perfect, but it worked, especially when we live-streamed the cake cutting so everyone felt included.
