I used to think that balloons are pretty boring as props or decorations, but when I heard that The Balloon Museum will host its incredibly popular balloon-themed exhibition inside Marina Bay Sands, I was definitely intrigued. Now that I’ve checked it out, I’m a changed man!
Simply put, the installations on display at Pop Air — Art is Inflatable are unique and mesmerising. Some looked so ethereal that I felt like I was transported to a fantastical world!
If you’re planning to visit, here are the sections and installations that you should definitely check out.
Installation Highlights
Spiritus Sonata by ENESS
From: balloon_museum
Of all the installations featured in this art exhibition, Spiritus Sonata by ENESS has to be the most otherworldly-looking. This inflatable is massive and luminous.
Wind instruments are used to inflate these structures, and the result is an overlapping layer of serene, lullaby-like sound. Being in this room brought me back to my childhood years because the atmosphere and the music invoked that wonderful imagination I had as a kid.
Crazy Love for Polygons
From: town.and.concrete
If you love building things with LEGO blocks, then you’ll love Crazy Love for Polygons. After all, this is an interactive installation that lets you play around with the polyhedral inflatables, so you can create giant structures if you want.
I’m not that inventive, so when I first came here, I just stacked the polyhedral inflatables into a tower. I saw other people making a fort or some other unique structure, and I was thoroughly impressed. Let your inner creativity loose here!
BAU(NCY) HAUS
From: balloon_museum
An inflatable labyrinth is the best way I can describe BAU(NCY) Haus. This maze has inflatable pillars of sorts, which are equipped with LED lights that perform orchestrated sequences.
Navigating this maze with all the lights makes you feel like you’re under the influence of a strong hallucinatory drug. Every curve and corner here is a mystery; it’s the perfect installation for people with an overactive imagination.
Aria
From: balloon_museum
Aria may be an installation that makes use of digital technology instead of physical materials like the other installations, but it’s just as immersive. This project puts you in a tight room with screens for the walls, and projected on these screens are images of thousands of balloons lost in the sky.
Somewhere in the images, you can spot an apparition of a female face—Aria herself. She shifts and morphs in the sea of colourful balloons, and her mysterious apparition will have you hooked and curious.
To make things better, this installation has an immersive sound design that makes you feel like you’re also floating in the sky. It sounds very dream-like, and if you’re not careful, you just might doze off.
Canopy
From: balloon_museum
The main thing I love about Canopy is that it truly is an interactive installation. At first glance, you’ll find tree-like light structures and what looks like a bicycle to the side.
You might be confused as to why this room is dark or why there’s a bike, but if you get on the bike and pedal, you’ll witness a magical transformation.
Essentially, the bike is a generator in disguise, and pedalling it will bring the tree-like structures to life. The way the room gets slowly lit up gives me a dopamine rush! The result is such a beautiful sight!
Hypercosmo
From: balloon_museum
Hypercosmo is one of the standout installations for me because it’s so trippy. It’s a reimagining of our natural environment where both the ground and the sky are made with dimly lit balloons.
This is another installation that has a dream-like quality to it. It feels like I’m floating, and the colours are beautiful and calming. It’s so tempting to just give in to the temptation and sleep here!
Soft Hurricane
From: quiet_ensemble
Soft Hurricane uses wind and light to create dramatic effects with balloons, and true enough, the result is very dramatic. Basically, there are spots in the room that will generate a minor tornado of sorts, causing the balloons to be propelled into the air.
Because of the strength of the gust, the balloons end up looking like they’re dancing as one body, and the colours, which range from pastel to dark and moody, make everything look even more ethereal. Such a great spot for a selfie!
Swing and Cloud Swing
From: balloon_museum
Simply put, Swing is like a bigger version of multiple pendulums. It even reminds me of Newton’s Cradle, since the suspended spheres are placed right next to each other.
Moving through the space will make the spheres bounce or spin. It’s a great installation for little kids because it invites them to play to their heart’s content.
ADA
From: balloon_museum
Named after Ada Lovelace, the mathematician who created the first true computer, ADA is an installation that inspires you to make your own artistic creation using a PVC sphere.
This sphere is bristling with charcoal sticks, and as you roll it on the floor or against the walls or the ceiling, the sticks will leave a mark. It reminds me of when I was a toddler and scribbled on the floors and walls with crayons!
Glowing Ballet
From: balloon_museum
Glowing Ballet is another installation that plays around with gusts of wind and lights to create dramatic effects with the balloons. This time around, the balloons rise and fall in choreographed movements that make them look like they’re dancing!
Feel free to dance along with these balloons. A ballerina friend who visited this exhibition with me danced here, and it was such a sight to behold!
A Quiet Storm
From: balloon_museum
Dark and moody is the vibe you’ll get from A Quiet Storm. This installation features a dark, enclosed space, and the only light comes from a spotlight at the far end.
The main highlight is the soft bubbles drifting. When they burst, they look like wisps of smoke in the darkness! This installation makes me feel like I’m inside a dark fairytale world, which is why I have such a soft spot for it.
10 Agosto
From: balloon_museum
10 Agosto is a kinetic installation featuring a floating ring of shimmering lights above, a couple of swings, and misty fog on the ground. There’s also lovely music playing in the background, which reminds me of the elves’ haunting songs from Lord of the Rings.
The vibe here is romantic and magical, which I suppose is intentional considering that the inspiration behind this piece is the Night of San Lorenzo, also known as the Night of Wishes. This is a popular tradition in Italy where people make wishes when there are multiple shooting stars in the sky.
Just swaying on the swings here is already a standout memory for me. I can see why many couples prefer to come here.
