best-feeding-and-swallowing-therapy-singapore

Improve oral intake with the best feeding and swallowing therapy clinics in Singapore!

Longevity: All clinics in this review have at least one year of experience managing feeding and swallowing difficulties. To confirm, we checked profiles, CVs, registries, memberships, and directories.

Credentials: Relevant bodies, physical documents, and the sources above were examined to ensure only clinics with AHPC-registered therapists were included.

Bonus scores were granted to picks with awards or a recognised body of work.

Communication: We graded transparency, professionalism, empathy, and active listening skills using info obtained through parent interviews, case studies, forums, and feedback.

Accessibility: Clinics within 20 minutes of the Singapore CBD were prioritised, with data gathered through test drives, interviews, and Google Maps. Closer ones and those with daily availability or teleconsultation/teletherapy features scored higher.

Pricing: Value for money was gauged by measuring session and consult fees against therapy outcomes and the criteria above.

Feeding and swallowing difficulties can significantly impact overall health. Without intervention, they may result in malnutrition, dehydration, and even airway obstruction.

Early support is a must. That’s especially true for parents of children with feeding or developmental concerns, as well as caregivers of older adults or patients recovering from neurological conditions.

Fortunately, Singapore has specialised clinics that provide targeted assessments and personalised treatment plans. The names discussed below have some of the best track records.

Magic Beans has lasted over a decade because of its successful treatments. This multidisciplinary clinic remains a trusted choice for treating dysphagia, chewing difficulties, feeding aversion, and related oral-motor challenges.

Therapists such as Aoyuan Li and Gemma Lee receive praise for the effectiveness of their adaptive care plans.

It’s neat that caregivers are involved in the process, too. They can participate in sessions or observe techniques first-hand to ensure home-based carryover.

The reassuring part is that everything is grounded in evidence-based programs, mainly the play-based SOS Approach. Over 820 studies are the basis of this holistic framework, which now has 30-plus years of results.

In the clinic’s case, those results include patients leaving behind their limited diet and chewing/swallowing difficulties.

Just take note that they’re not open daily, especially with demand running high.

Pros

  • Over 10 years of experience
  • Provides services across all age groups
  • Collaborative approach
  • Can address a broad range of oral-motor problems
  • Offers free initial consults

Cons

  • Closed on Sundays
  • Limited slots due to high demand

We are truly grateful to have discovered Magic Beans

My daughter was born premature and had several feeding challenges, including bottle aversion and frequent gagging when introduced to solids. Because of her early birth and these difficulties, she relied mostly on dream feeding for a long time, which we knew wasn’t sustainable.

We began feeding therapy at Magic Beans when she was about one year old, and it has been a transformative journey. Ms. Aoyuan worked closely with my daughter and us to gradually reduce her bottle aversion. As she continued to gag while taking solids, Ms. Aoyuan also helped her get comfortable with different textures and start accepting purees.

Later, Therapist Desiree focused on developing her chewing skills and introducing her to a wider range of textures. Over time, my daughter progressed from purees to biscuits and soft foods. Today, she can eat almost like other kids her age. While she’s still building confidence in self-feeding, we no longer worry about her ability to eat and chew.

We are truly grateful to have discovered Magic Beans and would wholeheartedly recommend it to any parent facing feeding challenges with their newborn or toddler. The most remarkable thing about Magic Beans is how understanding, supportive, and patient the therapists are, as they genuinely walk alongside you in your child’s journey.

My child has become more open to trying different food

I would like to thank Ms Gemma Lee for her assessment of my child’s picky diet and chewing difficulty. She was patient during the session and provided us some tips and guidance on how to wean off formula milk and how to get my child to be interested in the food. Furthermore, she was spot-on about children’s diet being less picky after entering pre-school. My child has become more open to trying different food and is able to chew properly as well. As with all therapist, being transparent will help them and in providing an accurate assessment. I definitely recommend Magic Beans services to all parents.

Advanced diagnostics guide TLC Speech Clinic’s treatment plans. Their support kit includes Videofluoroscopy and Fibreoptic Endoscopy Evaluation of Swallowing, both used for highly detailed, real-time swallowing assessments.

Once that’s done, their staff turns to established methods such as Food Chaining and the SOS Approach. These target a certain aspect of feeding, be it oral-motor strength or sensory acceptance.

Feeding programs centred on gradual exposure and positive reinforcement are done here as well. Clinical Meng Yi Yui often oversees the process, which is good news given her international training and Level 3 TalkTools OPT Certification.

TLC’s age coverage is a touch limited, though. Clients aged 0–18 years old make up the bulk of their caseload, so adults aren’t really who they focus on.

And while a rare mistake, getting a child’s name wrong before still costs them a few points.

Pros

  • Open since 2011
  • Has advanced diagnostic tools
  • Flexible formats (including group and individual therapy)
  • Offers teletherapy consults
  • Open daily

Cons

  • Limited programs for adults
  • Occasionally gets a child’s name wrong

Really thankful for Tr Audrey for making such an impact

Yun Wei has been with Tr Audrey since 2023 Jan. At that time , we went to 3 therapists at the same time to try out . She is the only one that Yun Wei built connection with and he asked to continue until today. We went through rough period in 2024 Mar when his aunty of 4 years leaving for good, Tr Audrey helped him transition the grief period and give time to him to adjust. Really thankful for Tr Audrey for making such an impact in his learning journey thus far!

Karen Chin is the speech-language therapist who runs Speech Barn. Her decade-long career includes stints in hospitals, private centres, and rehabilitation facilities.

Early intervention forms her core speciality, complemented by training in a multi-method system. Her toolkit involves PROMPT, PECS, HANEN, and SOS.

Collaboration is another strong point. To design effective, individualised plans, Karen often partners with educators, medical professionals, occupational therapists, and psychologists.

Do note, however, that Speech Barn doesn’t match the other clinics in terms of team size. Some picks have more than five in-house therapists; this one only has Karen.

It’s also our newest entry, having opened in 2024. Options with a history exceeding a decade are mentioned above and below.

But hey, only some of them come with unique perks, such as complimentary 30-minute teleconsults and a soothing rooftop garden.

Pros

  • Led by a seasoned speech therapist
  • Free 30-minute teleconsults
  • Uses several approaches
  • Collaborates with other professionals
  • Located in a very welcoming space

Cons

  • Newest entry on this list (2024)
  • Small team

Super Fun

Karen really has a way with children and knowledgeable in her field. The session is structured but she has many strategies up her sleeves which makes lesson super fun. My child has really improved by leaps and bounds in his pronunciation since attending weekly sessions. I would highly recommend Speech Barn ! Thank you ◡̈

If we’re talking delivery options alone, Ohana Therapy is our most flexible entrant. Their staff can provide mobile services for schools or workplaces, teletherapies, and home-based therapies.

Aside from reducing travel fatigue, the latter is particularly effective at building rapport quickly. Therapists get to observe real feeding behaviours while leveraging resources already available at home.

Ohana isn’t restricted to a specific age group or condition either. Children, adolescents, and adults with feeding/swallowing difficulties make up their clientele.

The downside of that is having to compete with several clients for slots (the clinic is appointment-based only), a situation the Saturday closure doesn’t alleviate.

But on a positive note, their sizeable workforce means over 10 therapists for feeding treatments are open for booking.

Another handy bit is the presence of separate teams for different needs. Think professionals for educational therapy, arts/music/play therapy, dietetics, and physiotherapy.

Pros

  • Provides mobile therapies
  • Large team
  • Helps individuals of all ages
  • Offers teletherapy services
  • Supports holistic care needs

Cons

  • High demand means limited slots
  • Saturday closure

A Professional Team

Visited Ohana Therapy today & I authentically love the people there (spoke to speech Wanda and play therapist Windy). They carried a smile, brought warmth and made the well lit space feel cosy. Oh that’s what we are looking for, aren’t we? A professional team that welcomes you as you are.

They have Speech Therapists, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Play Therapist, Counsellors etc. Basically the entire Allied Health team. Oh how wonderful. They have a great gym setup on another level too.

I’m looking forward to try their services. I’ve heard good stuff about them. Thanks for showing me around!!

Very Patient and Kind

My daughter, Ruo Xi, has been attending Speech Therapy with Joy and Occupational Therapy with Zann. Both therapists are very patient and kind, and they truly care about my daughter. In just three short months, I have already seen noticeable improvement in her. I strongly recommend Ohana to any mother who is looking for support and progress for their child.

Amazing Collective is arguably the most popular option on this list for several reasons.

To start, we’re talking about a decade-old clinic that has improved the lives of over 10,500 children, adults, and seniors!

Being an approved EIPIC-P Centre also boosts their demand. Through SG Enable, families can tap into government subsidies to access quality treatments without paying a premium.

Practice-wise, they use only evidence-based methods, and feeding therapy plans are personalised and developed following a detailed initial consult.

What’s nice is that regular weekly reviews keep the program up to date. As the client develops, goals and/or strategies are tweaked accordingly.

Be sure to call soon, though; slots don’t last long. Amazing Collective may have 38 therapists and educators on deck, but, as mentioned, they’re in high demand.

A more notable issue? Some clients have complained about appointments running behind schedule.

Pros

  • Operating for over 10 years
  • Extensive portfolio
  • Has 38 therapists and teachers on board
  • Conducts regular program reviews
  • More affordable due to subsidies

Cons

  • Incredibly high demand = competitive booking
  • Occasional late therapists

The results were evident

Our child had a wonderful learning journey at Amazing Speech, especially under the guidance of Ms. Brenda. She is articulate and eloquent in building trust and insightful interaction with the child. We were particularly impressed by how Ms. Brenda tactfully blends learning with play — our child was improving while having fun! The results were evident after just a few classes, and we could see the cheerful confidence growing in our little one. We are truly grateful and would definitely recommend Amazing Speech and Ms. Brenda to other parents.
