Light to Night 2025 sets SG aglow with incredible art installations!

Where: 17 January to 6 February 2025
When: Civic District

The Light to Night Festival is Singapore Art Week’s visual arts festival, and it’s quite the stunner! Once the sun sets, the Civic District becomes aglow with light projections on buildings and fun and thought-provoking art installations.

There are also various engaging programs and events for all ages happening during this festival!

This year’s theme is “Do You See Me?” which has to be my favourite one in recent years.

The best part about Light to Night is that it’s free—well, mostly. Some programs and events are ticketed, but still, there are more choices that won’t cost us any money.

What to Check Out

Art Skins on Monuments

Where: National Gallery, Singapore
When: 8 pm to 12 am

It won’t be a Light to Night festival without light projections on the National Gallery, so before you head anywhere else, stop by and fawn at the sight.

For 2025, the projections on the museum are the works of printmaker Chng Seok Tin, painter Goh Beng Kwan, and batik artist Jaafar Latiff. The museum building will be lit up in gorgeous colours and experimental animations!

Kalacakra

Where: Level 3, Rotunda Library and Archive, UOB Southeast Asia Gallery, Supreme Court Wing, National Gallery Singapore

When: 5:30 pm to 7 pm (Monday to Thursday), 5:30 pm to 11 pm (Friday to Sunday)

There are also fun things going on inside the National Gallery! One such display is Kalacakra, also known as A Clock for Progress.

This is yet another projection show, and it’s designed by media artist Kapilan Nadu. The best thing about this event is that it’s an interactive experience.

We have to fill out a quiz first, and the results will pull up unique artwork from the Gallery’s archives and project them to the ceiling. Fascinating!

Traveling Through the Tropical Rainforest

Where: Padang Field
When: 10 am to 12 am

Head over to Padang Field any day during the festival and treat yourself to the sight of six giant sculptures of what look like palm trees. These structures are made from synthetic materials, and they’re absolutely gorgeous when they’re lit up at night!

This installation also offers an interesting visual because it’s set against the cityscape. Hopefully, it will get visitors to think about how natural and urban environments can still work in harmony despite the fast-paced evolution of a city like Singapore.

Now You See Us?

Where: The Arts House at the Old Parliament, 1 Old Parliament Lane
When: 8 pm to 12 am

The National Gallery isn’t the only building getting light projections. The Arts House will also have its own!

Titled “Now You See Us?” this light projection is conceptualised by TraseOne, one of the pioneers of the street art movement in Singapore. So, you can expect to discover that the projection highlights the very best of the country’s graffiti and street art scene.

We’ll Make Heaven a Place on Earth

Where: ACM Green, Asian Civilizations Museum, 1 Empress Place
When: 10 am to 12 am

“We’ll Make Heaven a Place on Earth” is one of my most anticipated art installations for this festival. This one looks like a pagoda made of two-way mirrors, and it plays with light and perception. Being inside the structure with infinite reflections of yourself feels magical!

A Little Bead of Work

Where: Outdoor Lawn, The Arts House at the Old Parliament
When: 10 am to 10 pm

Friendship bracelets have become all the rage these past few years, and if you love making them, then you need to check out this installation. Helmed by artist Kray Chen, this art installation features glow-in-the-dark alphabet beads set across illuminated planter beds.

It’s meant to incite you to reflect on themes of visibility, identity, and connection—specifically, how words can form strong connections with other people.
