Pros

  • Senior industry player
  • Reasonable single-class rates
  • Discounts available for dance card completers
  • Central location

Cons

  • Weekday classes limited to evening slots
  • Not all instructors hold a RAD certification

Singapore Ballet’s long-standing presence in the city’s dance industry since 1987 makes it one of the most well-known ballet schools here.

As it is well-known, many adults are enrolled here. They said the school is impressive for its consistently high-quality lessons and competent instructors.

Many students shared that they love how the teaching quality remains high even when their instructors change now and then.

They said the instructors are a joy and always provide detailed guidance. Moreover, they are gentle when correcting or adjusting forms.

One lifelong learner added that the company’s studios are spacious. She also loves the fact that she can catch glimpses of professional dancers practicing whenever she visits the place.

Students also mentioned that the school’s dance card allows them to attend classes any day they want. Many welcome this loose setup since they have other obligations and can’t commit to a fixed schedule.

However, Singapore Ballet’s adult weekday classes are limited to evening schedules (usually 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM), which isn’t favorable for students who prefer earlier slots and those who can’t attend on weekends.

Also, not all instructors have RAD certifications. While most of the school’s instructors are dance degree holders and capable teachers, some serious students might find the lack of a RAD certificate a downside.

Pros

  • Most instructors have RAD certifications
  • Pleasant class vibe
  • Multiple locations

Cons

  • Registration fee is a bit pricey
  • Closed on weekday mornings

City Ballet Academy’s RAD-certified dance instructors may appeal most to adults who have prior experience and want to resume pursuing excellence in ballet.

Students with ballet backgrounds said the beginner class was remarkable, as it helped refresh their memories.

One former dancer (who stopped seven years) said that at the end of the first class, she easily remembered the basics thanks to her eloquent and helpful instructor.

Another student with advanced skills said the school’s character dance class is a welcome add-on to her learning, as it incorporates Vaganova ballet techniques.

So far, she has learned the mazurka and Russian dance and is excited to learn more. The instructor is also talented and friendly, making her classes enjoyable.

However, classes at City Ballet are slightly pricey. The one-time registration fee costs $50, while the single lesson is $40.

Bundled classes are also limited to six and 12 sessions. If you love ballet so much, you might use up your package faster than you think, incurring additional purchases as you go.

Pros

  • Senior industry player
  • Accomplished, RAD-certified dance teachers
  • Easy-to-reach location
  • Spacious studio

Cons

  • Only three classes are available weekly
  • Offers only one class package

With over 30 years of industry experience and RAD-certified instructors, Dance Arts Singapore is an obvious choice for most adults getting back into ballet dancing.

The school offers freestyle ballet lessons for students of all skill levels, including adults with no dancing experience.

Dance Arts also has dedicated instructors for the adult classes who, according to the students we interviewed, are vibrant, highly knowledgeable, and patient ballet teachers.

One newbie dancer who recently completed his beginner classes said that he was most impressed with the pacing of each lesson (he opted for one-hour sessions).

He said his teacher used the time allotted for instructions and exercises most efficiently, so he was able to follow every lesson.

He added that the instructor occasionally adjusted her speed to ensure everyone understood the lessons. Moreover, she was generous with her improvement tips!

Adult ballet classes by Dance Arts are limited, though. Lessons are available only thrice a week, which isn’t always favorable for students with busy, unpredictable schedules.

Also, students are limited to taking a single class or a 12-class package.

Pros

  • Most senior instructors have RAD certifications
  • Private coaching available
  • Highly responsive customer desk
  • Perceptive and communicative instructors

Cons

  • Limited promos
  • Slightly pricey class packages

Ballet Quarter is ideal if you plan to get a private coach to improve your dancing skills.

The school’s private ballet class is special, as those who opt for it can learn from the school’s brilliant co-founder Qi Huan.

One of the learners who completed private classes with him only had good things to say about the instructor.

The student praised the instructor’s friendly demeanor and smooth communication skills, saying that his attitude contributed to pleasant and fulfilling lessons.

Fortunately, the teacher also handles group and open ballet classes, so you can still experience his teaching talent even when you can’t enroll in a private coaching session.

That said, not all of the school’s adult ballet instructors are certified by RAD.

While that’s not entirely a bad thing (as all of the instructors here are talented regardless of certifications), you might want to keep the fact in mind when checking the teachers for the available classes.

It’s also a bit disappointing that many of Ballet Quarter’s discount promos are applicable to lessons for young kids. Adults could use a price slash, too, you know!

Pros

  • Supportive and fun instructors
  • Friendly customer desk
  • Convenient location
  • Many class options for experienced dancers

Cons

  • Pricey registration fee
  • Few ballet instructors

M.A Ballet’s beginner-friendly floor barre and basic class is a perfect introductory lesson for adults still on the fence about taking up ballet.

The beginner-friendly class focuses on daily ballet routines, which help train newbies’ muscles and tone their bodies.

One student who enrolled in the class to test the waters said the decision allowed her to assess her body’s capabilities and the school’s competence.

She said she was surprised that she’s capable of graceful movements even at 40. She also shared that the discovery would not be possible if not for her talented and supportive instructors.

She added that M.A Ballet’s teachers have a professional air without being intimidating, making the classes comfortable and enjoyable.

Meanwhile, adults with years of ballet experience have plenty to choose from. The intermediate, advanced, and repertoire classes are all designed to help them take their dancing skills to the next level.

One student mentioned that the repertoire class made one of her dreams come true. This class allows students to perform solo to a classical piece, and she got to perform Swan Lake!

However, the school’s instructors are few (only six so far), so you won’t get as much teaching variety as in other schools.

M.A Ballet Class also charges a pricey registration fee of $100, which we think casual ballet learners would think twice about.

Pros

  • Structured and accredited RAD programs
  • Well-equipped professional-grade studios
  • Experienced and dedicated faculty

Cons

  • Location may be inconvenient for some students

The Ballet Academy, an accredited school under the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), offers a wide range of ballet programs for children, teens, and adults in Singapore. With a focus on foundation, expression, and rigor, the academy provides comprehensive training that prepares students for RAD grading. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced dancer, The Ballet Academy offers classes tailored to different skill levels and needs, including fitness and pre/post-natal classes.

We like that the academy offers RAD-graded syllabi, which include Pre-Primary to Grade 8 levels, as well as Vocational Graded Syllabus and Discovering Repertoire programs. This structured approach ensures that students receive internationally recognized training, which can be crucial for those aiming for a professional dance career. The variety of classes, from pre-ballet for young children to advanced vocational training for older students, ensures that there is a clear progression path for every student.

Moreover, The Ballet Academy boasts a team of experienced and dedicated faculty who are passionate about teaching and mentoring their students. The faculty members are not only skilled in ballet techniques but also in nurturing students’ personal growth and love for dance. The academy’s studios are equipped with professional-grade flooring and mirrors, creating an ideal learning environment.

However, there are some potential drawbacks to consider. The rigorous training and commitment required for RAD examinations might be overwhelming for some students, especially those who are new to ballet or prefer a more casual approach to dance.

In conclusion, The Ballet Academy offers a robust and comprehensive ballet education, making it an excellent choice for those serious about learning ballet. Its structured RAD programs, experienced faculty, and well-equipped facilities provide students with the tools they need to succeed in dance.
